Senator, Dr. Floyd Morris to lead 5K Run / Walk for homeless; Urges Jamaicans to “be good Samaritans”
KINGSTON, Jamaica. August 14, 2017 – Senator, Dr. Floyd Morris is set to lead hundreds of runners and walkers in the 6th Annual Good Samaritan Health Run /Walk on Sunday, August 27, 2017. The race gets underway at the Andrews Memorial SDA Church on Hope Road in Kingston with the Good Samaritan Inn, a drop-in centre for the homeless as the main beneficiary.
Senator Morris, who has participated in the run for several years, is the event’s first patron. He is Director for the Centre of Disability Studies at the University of the West Indies, Mona and has served as President of the Jamaican Senate. He is the first blind person to hold that office.
The Good Samaritan Run / Walk is organized by the Andrews Memorial SDA Church and friends of the Good Samaritan Inn. The route will take participants from the Andrews Memorial SDA Church, 29 Hope Road to Trafalgar Road, through the New Kingston business district, on to Lady Musgrave Road; ending at the original start location. Warm up is at 6:00a.m. with race start at 6:30a.m.
The 2016 staging of the Good Samaritan 5K Health Run /Walk saw several elite racers taking top positions: Kemar Leslie (16:01), Ryon Chambers (16:22) followed by Andrew Gutzmore with a time of 17:35. Arieta Martin was the champion female runner (21:09) with Chris-Ann Lewis (21:37) and Janetta Robinson (22:23).
The Good Samaritan Inn was opened in December 2006 and offers overnight accommodations, with shower and laundry facilities for the homeless. Hot meals are also provided at the Inn for approximately 400 persons each week. A dental clinic was opened in 2016 and serves the residents of the Inn as well as members of the community in and around the National Heroes Circle in Kingston.
Other charities which received contributions from the 2016 Good Samaritan 5K Health Run /Walk are the Missionaries of the Poor and The Open Arms Drop In Centre that caters to homeless men.
