Good Samaritan Inn To Benefit From Adventist World Church Offering
Come fourth quarter of 2014, the Good Samaritan Inn (GSI) in Jamaica will be the recipient of a portion of the Thirteenth Sabbath Offering collected by the World Church of Seventh-day Adventists for missions. The funds received will be used to assist in the building of a health clinic and skills training center at the GSI.
On Sunday, March 16, 2014, Ricky Oliveras, Adventist Mission Video Producer of the General Conference (GC), visited the Inn to capture video footage and photographs to assist in the promotion of the great work being done at the Inn to the Adventist World Church. The GSI will be one of two projects that will benefit from the fourth quarter thirteen Sabbath offering collected around the world later this year.
On hand to introduce Oliveras to the patrons of the GSI, was Pastor Carl Cunningham, Sabbath School / Personal Ministries & Community Services Director -EJC . Cunningham explained to the more than one hundred and fifty needy men, women and children who turned up to receive their hot meal that day, that Oliveras would be taking video clips and doing video interviews with some of them to share the activities of the Inn, with the rest of the world.
"There is an offering that is collected right around the world that is sent to special projects, called the Mission Offering," Pastor Cunningham explained. " This year, for the first time in our almost one hundred and twenty five year history of the Adventist Church being in Jamaica (next year will be 125 years), this offering will be coming to our shores and it will be coming to help our project here at the God Samaritan Inn."
"Isn't it wonderful that you will not only be able to get food and clothing and have your hair looked after, but we will be able to put up a medical clinic that you can get medical care that the doctors and dentists can look after you and especially our children in this area ?" Cunningham asked, with a look which betrayed his glad anticipation of the time when that will be a reality.
His faithful audience sat patiently through the brief introductions and devotional exercise that was conducted by visiting evangelist, Dr. Clive Dottin from Trinidad. It was obvious however, that many were more concerned with how soon they would be receiving their meals than the promise of a health facility to benefit them in the distant future .
Oliveras, who had arrived in the island three days before, was delighted to share why he was in the island and the significance of his visit to the GSI receiving financial support.
"The purpose of my visit here, is to help promote to the rest of the world, the Good Samaritan Inn project. I am here and they are doing laundry, they are doing hair cuts people are being fed, its just an amazing thing to see," Ricky Oliveras said with excitement.
"The video clips that I will do, will help to promote the Good Samaritan Inn project so that Seventh-day Adventists around the world will give to this special project and they can see exactly where their money will be going," Oliveras said.
The Adventist Mission Video Producer continued by saying "People around the world can help through their prayers, through their offerings and it will just be an amazing thing to see this project expand."
Ricky Oliveras shared that the videos he will create, will be distributed through different resources.
"One of the channel will be through 3ABN programs, a program called Global Mission Snapshots. On Hope Channel we have a program called Mission 360 and every single video that we create is offered right on Youtube. You can go to youtube.com/adventistmission to find the video that will be created to promote the Good Samaritan Inn later this year. It's an easy way to find our videos," Oliveras said.
On February 18, 2014, Mission Editor of the General Conference of SDA, Gina Wahlen, along with Mission Director at the Inter-American Division, Pastor Samuel Telemaque, visited the Inn to collect data and conduct inerviews for the Mission Story that will be written about the Inn.
